About Cervical Screening

The Cervical Screening Test (CST) has replaced the Pap smear in Australia. It's a simple test that looks for the human papillomavirus (HPV) — the virus that causes almost all cervical cancers.

The test is quick, done every 5 years (instead of 2 years for the old Pap smear), and is more effective at detecting pre-cancerous changes early.

Self-Collection Now Available

If you're eligible, you can now do the test yourself in the privacy of our clinic. Ask your GP if self-collection is right for you.

Who Needs Cervical Screening?

Women and people with a cervix aged 25-74
Anyone who has ever been sexually active
People who have had the HPV vaccine (vaccine doesn't cover all strains)
Those who haven't had a screen in 5+ years
People with symptoms like abnormal bleeding or pelvic pain

If Your Results Are Abnormal

An abnormal result doesn't mean you have cancer. Most abnormal results show minor changes that either go away on their own or can be easily treated.

If further investigation is needed, your GP will refer you to a gynaecologist for a colposcopy — a closer look at your cervix. Early detection and treatment is highly effective.

Our GPs will support you through every step and ensure you understand your results and options.
