Why See Your GP for Women's Health?
In Australia, your General Practitioner (GP) is your first point of contact for almost all healthcare needs — including women's health. This is by design: the Medicare system relies on GPs as "gatekeepers" to ensure you receive appropriate, coordinated care.
Unlike some countries where you can go directly to a specialist, the Australian system requires a GP referral to see gynaecologists, fertility specialists, and other women's health specialists — and to access Medicare rebates for those appointments.
This approach ensures continuity of care: your GP knows your full medical history, can coordinate between specialists, and provides ongoing management of chronic conditions like PCOS, endometriosis, and menopause.
Your GP Can:
- Prescribe contraception, including the pill, IUDs, and Implanon
- Perform cervical screening (Pap smears) and breast checks
- Manage pregnancy care (shared care), fertility concerns & PCOS
- Prescribe treatments for UTIs, thrush, and pelvic pain
- Refer you to gynaecologists, obstetricians, and specialists when needed
- Create Mental Health Care Plans for perinatal depression
Bulk Billing
Our women's health consultations, including contraception, cervical screening, and antenatal shared care, are bulk billed — meaning no out-of-pocket costs with your Medicare card.
